Sooo scrunchies are back! (And have been for awhile.) I’m definitely not the first to make a DIY scrunchie tutorial, but I hope you enjoy my version, made musical with some Fischarper fabric! And bonus, you also get to upcycle broken ponytail holders (or hair ties, or elastics, or your preferred name for them).
While you’re crafting, don’t forget to put some music on! 🙂
Supplies:
- 5.5″x 22″ strip of messy treble clef fabric (I sewed 2 pieces together to make it this long)
- 2 broken ponytail holders
- fabric glue (I used Fabri-Tac)
- scissors
- safety pin
- straight pins (optional, but can be helpful)
- clip or clamp (optional, but can be helpful)
- iron (& ironing board or pad)
- sewing machine
How to:
Step 1
Iron your material. If you need to sew multiple pieces together to get the right amount of fabric, do that now. Trim any extra fabric.
Step 2
Fold the fabric in half (hot dog style), right sides facing. Pin together if you want, & sew along long edge with a straight stitch. Secure with some reverse stitches at the beginning & end.
Step 3
Trim excess from seam allowance (optional). Attach the safety pin to one end. After closing the safety pin, feed it through the tube of fabric, turning it right side out. Remove safety pin & press with the iron.
Step 4
Fold the edges of one end of the tube under & press.
Step 5
Trim the stretched part of your ponytail holders off. Knot the together & trim off tails. Attach safety pin to end & feed through the fabric tube. Make sure to hold on to the other end! Remove safety pins & tie the ends together.
Step 6
Making sure the tube is not twisted & the seams are lined up, tuck the end of the tube that isn’t folded over into the folded over end. Apply fabric glue & clamp. Once it’s dry, you might want to fuss with the glued area to loosen it up a little.
Step 7
Wear or give as a gift, & enjoy replying to compliments with “Thanks! I made it!” 🙂
You could also make this no-sew by using fabric glue in place of a sewing machine.
Which musical fabric print would you like to make into a scrunchie? If you make this project, I’d love for you to send me a picture or tag me on social media!
