Welcome to this month’s 5 Questions with…, featuring Cody Smith of the band Cody & Co.
I’ve known Cody since he was a kid. I ran into him a few years ago at Ghostbird Theatre Company’s 24 Hour Festival, & then again at this year’s. When I messaged him on the ‘gram to see if he’d be interested in being a guest for the 5 Questions with… series, he quickly agreed!

Before you head into the interview, why not turn on the Fischarper Blog Guests playlist?
What do you most enjoy about making music?
Not needing a real job. Having an outlet for all my crazy, getting emotionally connected to people over my work, and constantly having an excuse to leave the house are all great – but sleeping in until 10 every day is the best part.
Can you tell us a little about your process for developing & releasing records?
In the past I would just drink as much caffeine as possible during a manic episode, then I’d just have an all new original ep done in like 2-3 weeks. Right now I’m actually taking time to just sit with the music I’m working on and revise stuff, which is driving me crazy, but my writing has gotten way better because of it.
Who/what are some of your biggest musical influences?
The influences that I tell older strangers are The Cure and David Bowie, the ones I tell hipsters are the Mountain Goats and the Front Bottoms, and the Willie Nelson stuff only really comes up in interviews.
What’s your recording/producing setup look like?
I run a Behringer C-4* and Shure Sm57* into a Focusrite 2i2* into Ableton on a laptop. It’s not an impressive set up, but I’ve recorded full bands for my record label “Trash Cat Records” on it without needing to shell out thousands of dollars.
Who else should be a guest for the “5 Questions with…” series?
Deciymber Goss of Set Life Pro would be a great chat about self promotion in a small music scene.
And there you have it! Go say hi to Cody & Co. on Instagram & don’t forget to give his music a listen!
Now it’s your turn. Let me know what genre of musicians you’d like to see interviewed in this series.
Cody & Co. is a project by multi-instrumentalist and ampersand enthusiast Cody Smith that started out as an attempt to start a music collective but just turned into a band with friends and collaborators Isaiah Suriel on saxaphone, Brendan Dubois on bass, and Skyler Lapham on drums. Cody & Co. is self-managed, self-recorded, and self-published.
