At the Movies Vol 9 – The Magic School Bus

“At the Movies” I link to TV shows and/or movies that have music in them…often harps (of course!). These might (or might not) be resources you’d like to add to your lending library or assign for students to find as some fun, away-from-the-instrument homework!
Today’s installment features an episode of The Magic School Bus. In “The Magic School Bus In The Haunted House,” the students play music (including one student with an invented instrument…which kind of reminds me of Dr. Holsinger). You can find harps at least three times: the gates to the mansion, the harp in a picture in the hallway, and a huge harp when the students start learning about vibration and sound. Also, look at Ms. Frizzle’s dress! The bottom kind of reminds me of this dress.

If you assign your students to watch this episode, you might also assign your student to invent a musical instrument, kind of like Carlos does in the episode. Ask your student to apply what he/she learned about vibration and sound to the invented instrument.

Scholastic’s website has some additional resources for this episode that you can use for homework as well. (My mom shared that link with me….have you joined her on Facebook at Harp Fix?)

What have you been enjoying on the tube lately? Let me know in the comments!
